This section lists the temperate bamboo species we are growing. Although
they are temperate, and many of the temperate bamboos do not grow well in
South Florida, we have been test-growing and selecting the species that
perform well in our climate. These species will, of course, be well-suited
for colder climates as well. They are all running bamboos with various
levels of aggressiveness and may require a method of containment to keep the
from spreading beyond your intended planting area. Most are ideal bamboos
for containers.

Acidosasa edulis
We are test-growing this Chinese running bamboo. Green culms, glabrous, sheaths initially green, with purple ciliate edge, later turning brown. Densely covered with setae, sheath auricles narrow, with brown tomenta on surface, a few cilia on edge. Leaves lanceolate. Shoot period may-shoot delicious-a fine species for shoot production in summer.
Culm height 30', culm diameter 2 1/2"
A temperate, running bamboo that grows very well in sub-tropical South Florida. Highly variegated leaves with a bushy overall form. This is a great bamboo for containers but, if planted in the ground, you should consider intstalling a rhizome barrier to control and shape the growth pattern in your garden. Listed at 30' at maturity but seems to stay within 20' tall in South Florida. Cold hardy to 10 degrees F. Min USDA zone: 8. Click to find your zone.
